Introducing Manchester Chiropractor Dr. Gary Blackwood

Chiropractic works! It’s safe and challenges the established attitudes towards health. Do you want a body that aches and occasionally racks with pain after the simplest of movements or at the most stressful of times, or would you prefer a robust body capable of dealing with the constant force of life stresses being thrown against it?

No matter what the age with the right advice and care most people can have the latter.

At a very stressful time in my life I started to make the right choices, I improved my diet, varied my exercise program to include yoga and started to see a Chiropractor. All of these started me on a journey which led eventually, after 4 years of college, to having the good fortune of working each day with a growing selection of people who are also making the right choices, and for each one the part that I play in improving their quality of life is a great reward for all my efforts.

Throughout my childhood and well into my first degree I was a very object orientated person. This led to a good education in the sciences and a strongly analytical mind. Following my first degree in Chemistry and a period working in London, I realised the importance, to me at least, of working to help people in some capacity. That allied with my personal beliefs towards the oversubscription of drugs within society and with the body’s ability to heal itself naturally led to chiropractic.

My analytical mind set me in good stead for the intensity of learning that took place at the AECC, the UK’s premier chiropractic school, which in turn has given me a wide and detailed knowledge base of the human body and how it reacts to disease processes.

In practice I believe in the body’s ability to heal itself as well as its ability to adapt. This ability is fantastic; however it is a double edge sword. The body adapts to all of life’s stresses, emotional, physical and chemical, until one day it can absorb no more and it starts to complain, through the medium of pain. Chiropractic works along with the patient to change attitudes and through the adjustment and soft tissue work, reset the bodies ability to absorb stress. If the body is a sponge and the stress is water, then treatment wrings the sponge out and advice, when heeded, slows down the influx of more water/stress

I like football. I like humour, especially from the people around me, but also from TV and movies and even music. I love music. I am especially into breaks, hip-hop and electronic music. I enjoy eating a healthy hearty breakfast each morning following my run and then look forward to a Sunday roast most of all, although even though I’ve moved up north, I still can not eat mushy peas! I also enjoy learning and it suits me to be in a profession that requires continual professional development throughout my career.

Exercise, eating healthy and regular adjustments is the key. I try to eat a healthy balanced diet, allowing for the odd transgression (its good for the soul), but making sure I eat plenty of nuts, seeds and fish, for my trace elements (the building blocks of the brain). I enjoy regular sport and exercise such as running, cycling, and squash and tend to recommend that any exercise is better than no exercise, so it’s about finding something you enjoy.
